Having previously worked in automotive manufacturing, Nissan and then car seat production, I’ve spent the last 21 years in supply chain and fleet management.
Most of my engagements have been long-term as a hands on ‘Fleet Manager’, in various sectors, including retail and distribution, manufacturing, FM and housing associations.
Recent engagements include;
• Refrigeration engineering, c.220 cars + vans
• Chemical manufacturers, c.350 cars across EMEA
• Plumbing merchants, c.500 cars
Each role varies widely, but have included full strategic reviews as well as day fleet management and everything else in between, including the planning and implementation of EV transitions of both car and LCV fleets. Typical fleet sizes have ranged from 130 to 500, although one recent fleet was a mixed fleet of 500 cars, 600 LCVs and 100 HGV’s. With a strong focus on managing fleet costs across often complex and ever-changing operational needs, I have demonstrated significant cost savings across all aspects of running a fleet.
I have always recognised the need to engage with all stakeholders within the business, even more in recent time recognising the integral role and contribution that fleet managers can have on an organisations carbon emissions and wider ESG implications.
Being able to engage with the various stakeholders across the business, including all drivers, in a knowledgeable manner but with empathy when appropriate, has ensured that EV transition plans have been achieved both within budget and at pace.
Shared learning can be applied and leveraged across the various fleets that I manage.
Reasons for applying and what I believe I would add to the AFP board.
I have been a Fellow of the association since 2014, after completing the ICFM Diploma.
I see myself firmly in the roll of a fleet operator. The fact that I manage multiple fleets for various organisations that do not typically have a dedicated fleet manager, allows me the privilege and benefit of having a very wide lens on the different perspectives and challenges that each individual fleet bring.
Throughout my association membership, I have always attended as many association events as possible. I really appreciate the benefits that continuous professional development can bring – I have attended most of the available training events and promote these along with AFP membership to a wider audience.
More recently I have joined a number of committees and hopefully demonstrate that I have an inquisitive mind and add value to the wider conversation.
I have also demonstrated my willingness to get involved in a wider capacity, eg: supporting the shared depot charging project etc…
I feel my independence and wide perspective of the various challenges that different organisations and sectors might have running their fleets, might allow me to bring a different view and value to the board and contribute actively and effectively for the benefit of the wider membership.
